King Juan Carlos I was the King of Spain from 1975 to 2014. He was born in Rome, Italy, in 1938, and was the son of King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg. Juan Carlos was exiled to Portugal and Switzerland during the Spanish Civil War, and returned to Spain after the war. He was proclaimed King of Spain in 1975, after the death of Francisco Franco.
