Baibars was a Mamluk general who assassinated Qutuz in 1260. Qutuz was a former slave who had risen through the ranks of the Mamluk military to become sultan of Egypt. He led the Mamluks to victory at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, which marked the first time that the Mongols had been defeated in battle.
