Rafael joined Botafogo in Brazil's top division after leaving Lyon in 2015. The defender had been at the French club since 2005, but he fell out of favor with manager Bruno Genesio and was allowed to leave on a free transfer. Rafael made 200 appearances for Lyon and scored 14 goals. He has also represented Brazil at the international level, winning the Copa América in 2019.
