The eroding of relations between the Dominican Republic and the international community following acts of state terrorism marked the beginning of the end for Trujillo. In particular, the bombing of a plane carrying 103 Dominicans and Americans in 1956, along with the murder of journalist Jesús María Troncoso in 1958, led to a number of countries cutting diplomatic ties with the Dominican Republic.
