Rómulo Betancourt was the Venezuelan president from 1945 to 1948, and again from 1959 to 1964. He was a member of the Democratic Action party (AD), and his first presidency was cut short by a coup d'état led by Marcos Pérez Jiménez. In 1958, Betancourt was elected president for a second time, and his government oversaw the restoration of democracy in Venezuela.
