Ramón Emeterio Betances is considered the father of the Puerto Rican independence movement. Betances was a physician, writer, and politician who was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico in 1827. He was a vocal critic of Spanish rule and was exiled from Puerto Rico for his political activities. Betances spent much of his life in exile, but he continued to work for Puerto Rican independence.
