Betances was from Puerto Rico, where he was born on January 11, 1848. He was a physician and politician who played a major role in the Puerto Rican struggle for independence. In 1865, he founded the Puerto Rican Revolutionary Committee in New York City. In 1868, he helped to lead the Grito de Lares rebellion against Spanish rule. After the rebellion was defeated, Betances was exiled to the Dominican Republic.
