Answer
Rauf Denktaş was the second President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), established in 1983. He belonged to the Turkish Cypriot community, one of the two main ethnic groups on the island of Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots are descendants of settlers who arrived from Anatolia (present-day Turkey) during the Ottoman period and form a distinct cultural and linguistic group from the Greek Cypriot community.
