Raul Hilberg was an immigrant to the United States. He was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1926, but his family fled the country in 1938 after the Anschluss, the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany. Hilberg immigrated to the United States in 1941 and settled in New York City. He became a citizen in 1945. Hilberg is best known for his work on the Holocaust.
