Tagmata, the reformed military force under Alexios I, replaced the old thematic system. It consisted of professional, standing armies recruited from the provinces and paid by the central government. The Tagmata were more loyal and effective than Thematic armies, as they were directly controlled by the emperor and had a stronger sense of unity and purpose.
