Władysław IV Vasa, the ruler whom John Casimir succeeded, was the King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania from 1632 until his death in 1648. During his reign, he notably attempted to restore the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth's influence in the Baltic Sea region and led several military campaigns against Sweden, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire.
