Answer
René Clair did work in the fantasy genre in his silent films. In his 1924 film Entr'acte, he creates a fantastical world where a man falls asleep in a theater and dreams he is a knight. Clair also made the 1925 film Paris qui dort, in which everyone in Paris falls asleep and the city is taken over by children.
