Exile was Richard Cromwell's fate after the Restoration. He had briefly succeeded his father, Oliver Cromwell, as Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, but his rule was marked by instability and opposition. Upon the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he fled to France, where he lived in obscurity until his death in 1712.
