Richard Helms began his intelligence career with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), which was the predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He worked for the OSS during World War II, and after the war he remained in the intelligence community, eventually becoming the director of the CIA from 1966 to 1973.
