Trevithick faced rivalry from other engineers during his professional career. One of his main rivals was John Blenkinsop, who developed a similar steam locomotive but was able to obtain government funding for his project. Trevithick was also in competition with George Stephenson, who was also developing a steam locomotive. However, Stephenson's locomotive was more successful than Trevithick's, and eventually became the standard design for steam locomotives.
