The Cornish inventor Richard Trevithick is credited with building the first high-pressure steam engine in 1801. This engine was able to produce a much greater power output than previous steam engines, and was therefore used to power a variety of industrial machinery. Trevithick's engine also played a key role in the development of the railway, as it was used to power the first steam locomotives.
