After the 1988 European Football Championship, Rinus Michels resigned as the manager of the Netherlands national football team, having been appointed in 1978. He was replaced by Dick Advocaat, who had previously managed Ajax and Feyenoord in the Netherlands. Advocaat led the Netherlands to the 1990 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the quarter-finals by West Germany.
