American. Woodward was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Bethesda, Maryland. He attended Yale University, where he studied history and English. After graduating from Yale, Woodward worked as a reporter for The Washington Post. He later became the Post's assistant managing editor for metropolitan news and then its executive editor.
