Robert Guéï was a military leader who ruled Côte d'Ivoire for several years after the death of Félix Houphouët-Boigny. In 2000, he was defeated in a presidential election by Laurent Gbagbo. Guéï refused to accept the results of the election and attempted to stay in power. He was eventually forced to flee the country and Gbagbo took over as president.
