Kelly began his tenure in 1950, after which he served as the first Principal/Vice-Chancellor of the University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (from 1955 until the university's dissolution in 1963), and ended his tenure as the first Principal of the University of Rhodesia in 1966. Following this, he became the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hong Kong from 1967 until 1972.
