Princeton University was Mueller's alma mater for his undergraduate studies. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics from Princeton in 1966. During his time at Princeton, Mueller was involved in various extracurricular activities, including serving as the president of the American Whig-Cliosophic Society, the oldest collegiate debate society in the United States.
