Robert Owen was born in Wales, United Kingdom, the son of a saddler. He was one of eight children. His father died when he was seven years old, and his mother remarried a few years later. Owen began working at the age of 10 in a textile mill. He quickly rose through the ranks and became the manager of a cotton mill in Manchester by the age of 21.
