Robert Smalls passed away in 1915. He was an American hero who escaped slavery during the Civil War and went on to become a successful businessman and politician. Smalls was born into slavery in 1839 in Beaufort, South Carolina. In 1862, he was serving as a cabin boy on a Confederate ship when he seized control of the ship and sailed it to the Union fleet.
