Answer
Robert Smalls was born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina, in 1839. As a young man, he worked as a boatman on the docks of Charleston Harbor. In 1862, he seized a Confederate ship, the Planter, and sailed it to the Union lines. This act made him a hero of the Union cause and a symbol of the freedom of African Americans.
