Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh, crossed the floor of the Irish Commons in 1790. He was originally a member of the Whig Party, but he switched to the Tory Party in order to support the government's policies towards Ireland. This move was controversial at the time, but it helped to secure Castlereagh's position as one of the most powerful politicians in Ireland.
