Under the management of André Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo served as an assistant manager at Chelsea during the 2011–12 season. Villas-Boas had been appointed as Chelsea's manager at the beginning of the season, succeeding Carlo Ancelotti. However, after a disappointing run of results, Villas-Boas was dismissed in March 2012 and replaced by Di Matteo on an interim basis.
