On the outbreak of the October Revolution, Malinovsky was serving in the Russian army during the First World War. He was fighting in Galicia, where he was captured by the Austro-Hungarian Army and sent to a prisoner-of-war camp. He escaped from the camp and joined the Bolshevik Red Army, where he fought against the White Army during the Russian Civil War.
