Roelof van der Merwe represented two countries in international cricket, South Africa and the Netherlands. He was born in South Africa and made his international debut for the country in 1970. He played for South Africa until 1981, when he was banned from international cricket for life due to apartheid. In 1992, van der Merwe was allowed to play international cricket again and he represented the Netherlands until 1997.
