Roger B. Taney, born in 1777, served as the fifth Chief Justice of the United States from 1836 to 1864. He is predominantly remembered for his controversial opinions in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case, in which he asserted that African Americans were not citizens and could not sue in federal court.
