During World War I, Roger Casement was executed for treason. Casement had been a British diplomat and had served in the Congo and in South America. He became a supporter of Irish independence and helped to organize the Easter Rising in 1916. After the Rising was suppressed, Casement was arrested and tried for treason. He was found guilty and executed by hanging in 1916.
