Román González first won a world title in 2008, when he defeated Akira Yaegashi by unanimous decision to become the WBA minimumweight champion. He would go on to defend his title three times before moving up in weight and winning the WBA light flyweight title in 2012. He has since defended that title seven times, and is considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
