Answer
On 24 January 2008, Prime Minister Romano Prodi lost a vote of confidence in the Senate leading to his resignation. The vote was called by Prodi himself after the defection of several key allies from his coalition. This brought to an end Prodi's second government, which had been in power for just over a year. Prodi's resignation led to the formation of a new government by Silvio Berlusconi.
