In 1961, Nureyev defected from the Soviet Union to the West. He had been a star of the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, but he was unhappy with the political and artistic restrictions of the Soviet system. He saw an opportunity to defect when he was performing in Paris, and he took it.
