Peierls fell under suspicion when his compatriot Klaus Fuchs was exposed as a spy for the Soviet Union. Fuchs had been a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and was recruited as a Soviet agent in 1941. He passed on information about the Manhattan Project, the American atomic bomb program, to the Soviet Union.
