After leaving Canada, Rudolph A. Marcus moved to the United States. He began his studies at the University of Chicago, where he received his doctorate in chemistry in 1951. He then spent a year as a postdoctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology before moving to the University of California, Berkeley, where he remained for the rest of his career.
