Rudolf I was the first Habsburg to be elected King of Germany in 1273. His main rival was King Ottokar II of Bohemia. Ottokar had expanded his power in Austria and Styria, and Rudolf sought to contain his expansion. In 1278, Rudolf defeated Ottokar at the Battle of Marchfeld and took control of Austria and Styria.
