Kapuściński supported the Solidarity Movement, a trade union movement in Poland that was created in 1980 in opposition to the country's Communist government. The Solidarity Movement gained popularity quickly and its members were able to successfully negotiate with the government for better working conditions and wages. However, the Solidarity Movement was eventually outlawed by the government and its leaders were arrested.
