Answer

John Wilkes Booth committed suicide by taking an overdose of barbital, a barbiturate, on April 26, 1865. He had been shot and captured earlier that day after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln. After being taken to the Old Penitentiary in Washington, D.C., Booth was placed in a cell with two guards. He managed to obtain a small bottle of laudanum, which he mixed with the barbital.
