Fulda was the site of Charlemagne's funeral. The emperor's remains were interred at the church of Saint Michael in the monastery of Fulda, which he had founded. The monastery was one of the most important in the Frankish Empire, and Charlemagne's burial there helped to establish it as a center of learning and culture.
