Kiir joined the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) in 1983. The SPLM is a political and military organization that fought for the independence of South Sudan from Sudan. Kiir rose through the ranks of the SPLM and eventually became its leader. He led the SPLM to victory in the Second Sudanese Civil War and became the first president of South Sudan in 2011.
