Salvatore Quasimodo was an Italian poet who spent most of his life in Rome. He was born in Syracuse, Sicily, in 1901, and died in Rome in 1968. He was a leading figure in the Italian literary movement known as hermeticism, and he is considered one of the most important poets of the 20th century.
