In 1996, Bob Dole resigned from his seat in the U.S. Senate to become the Republican Party's nominee for president. Sam Brownback, who had been elected to the Kansas Senate in 1994, was appointed to fill Dole's seat. Brownback was elected to a full term in 1998 and served in the Senate until 2011.
