Sam Fatu debuted in wrestling in 1983. He began his career in the independent circuit, wrestling for various promotions in the United States and Canada. In 1985, he joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), where he became known as The Tonga Kid. He was a member of the tag team The Islanders, along with his cousin Haku. The Islanders won the WWF Tag Team Championship twice.
