Sam Houston was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia on March 2, 1793. He was the son of Samuel Houston, a veteran of the American Revolution, and Elizabeth Houston. Houston was raised in Virginia and attended the College of William and Mary. He later moved to Tennessee, where he became a lawyer and politician. Houston served as the governor of Tennessee from 1827 to 1829.
