Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzania's first female vice-president in the 2015 General Election. She served as the vice-president to President John Magufuli, who died in March 2021. Hassan was sworn in as president on 19 March 2021, becoming the sixth president of Tanzania. She is the first woman to hold the position of president in Tanzania, and the second female president in Africa after Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia.
