Sammy Mandell was born in Rockford, Illinois, on March 31, 1902. He was the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland. Mandell began his career as a sportswriter for the Chicago Tribune before becoming a professional boxer in 1924. He won the world middleweight championship in 1926 and defended his title four times before losing it to Max Schmeling in 1928.
