Graça Simbine Machel was the wife of Samora Machel, the first president of Mozambique. She was born in 1945 in Inhambane, Mozambique, and became involved in the struggle for independence from Portuguese colonial rule at a young age. After Mozambique gained independence in 1975, she served as Minister of Education and Culture. She married Samora Machel in 1976, and they had two children together.
