Answer
The J/ψ particle was discovered in 1974 by Samuel C. C. Ting. It is a meson composed of a charm quark and an anti-charm quark, and is the first particle to contain a charm quark. The discovery of the J/ψ particle led to the development of the quark model of hadrons, and to the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics to Ting and Burton Richter in 1976.
