Samuel Griffith retired from politics in 1893. He had been a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly since 1878, and had served as Premier of Queensland from 1883 to 1888. Griffith was a leading figure in the establishment of the Australian Federation, and was the first Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia.
