Serena Williams' first Grand Slam tournament was the 1999 French Open. She was 17 years old at the time and unseeded, but she defeated three seeded players to reach the final, where she beat Martina Hingis in three sets. Williams' victory made her the youngest player to win a Grand Slam singles title since Maria Sharapova won the 2004 Wimbledon Championships.
